Atlanta vs Defe / Racing vs Godoy Cruz

Today, Racing plays against Godoy Cruz and Atlanta plays Defensores de Belgrano. The former is relatively uninteresting, the latter quite the contrary.

In the past, Defe vs Atlanta was a big occasion for us due to the dislike that both clubs fans have of each other. The last few years, there being no away fans allowed at lower division futbol games in Argentina, this has become somewhat less exciting. For this reason, well concentrate on anecdotes and moments of the past of more interest.

A not unusual scene at Atlanta vs Defensores. In Villa Crespo a few years ago…

I have a somewhat love/hate relationship to Defensores de Belgrano. There was a time (late 90s I think) when I was exiled from Atlanta. To make a long story short: One day during an away game, I was standing around behind the goal. Being the young anarchist that I was, I had some t-shirt with some politically explicit slogan which gave away my political „inclinations.“ Suddenly, from behind I hear „vos que haces aca? Zurdo de mierda!“ (roughly translated „what are you doing here? Fucking Leftist! And „zurdo“ is an especially derogative term used by fascists/cops/soldiers to refer to leftists) I turned around just fast enough to move out of the way of a fist about the size of my head headed towards me, belonging to a body about three heads larger than mine. The giant then proceeded to try to rip off my tshirt (failed), but I was eventually pushed out of the area behind the goal in a very (very) unfriendly manner.
I then began the process of organizing my friends, contacts, and generally sympathetic people in order to make possible my return to my clubs terraces. However, this proved to be a somewhat long and complicated process, as apparently the person who attacked me was an ex-member of the „Camargo Skinheads“ which were a Neo-Nazi skinhead group which had apparently been active a few years earlier in Atlanta. Although they were no longer active and werent even recognizable, they still had enough connections to be a problem.

This is all of course especially crazy given that Atlanta is the representative team of Villa Crespo, one of Buenos Airess historically (and still currently) most Jewish neighborhoods. Our stadium is called „Leon Kolbowsky“ and the derogatory term other teams fans use to refer to Atlanta and its fans is „los judios“ (the Jews). Antisemitic chants against us (and even the ocassional swastica flag) are not rare.

Regardless, it took several months before I could return to Atlanta, and an alternative entertainment for Saturday afternoons was needed. Since I had lots of friends at Defensores de Belgrano, for a time went to see Defe and travelled with them (and their barra/hooligans) on several occasions. And so, regardless of where my heart truly lied…when you get ambushed in a Buenos Aires slum because the cops steer your buses into the middle, then suddenly disappear, and the next step is you being shot at from several directions….you develop certain bonds with people through shared suffering! :-)

On the other hand, a sector of Defes fans also slipped into antisemitic folklore and jokes which made me, while standing around there, very uncomfortable and feeling not quite safe. The high (low?) point of this was an Atlanta vs Defe in Defes stadium in the early 1999 or 2000, where Defe fans greeted the entrance of Atlantas players on the pitch by throwing bars of soap. This act was even more repulsive because the „terrace“ from which this happened is named after a Jewish leftist, and Defe fan, by the name of Marcos Zucker who was killed during the last military dictatorship (one of the most famous torture camps of the dictatorship era is located directly across the street from Defes stadium). Fortunately, I was with the Atlanta fans that day.

This phase seems to be over in Defe, as those who understand Spanish can see in the following video, where there is very positive referance to Marcos Zucker, anti-military songs being chanted, and so forth.

This video shows Defes fans in the neighborhood of their archrivals Excursionistas…who are nowhere to be found.

Finally, a video of a tragic incident in Argentine futbol and a great example of the behavior of Argentine police. What is seen here is not rare, what is rare is that it was caught on tape, and that the police went so far as to kill an already arrested fan and then claim that he died „falling from the back of the van“ in which he was being transported.

Racing Club and Lothar Matthäus or: Lothar Matthäus Ruined My Life

I could have posted this article several days ago, but I didnt. Why? Because, as they say, everybody has their price, and mine is apparently the possibility of a job at Racing. An idea which I had managed to accept as fantasy somewhere on the level of a child wanting to be a cowboy or an astronaut.
But suddenly, when a few days ago Lothar Matthäus was announced as Racings new coach (see below), it all became very real. A friend of mine emailed me and said „hey, you could be his translator.“ I answered something along the lines of how funny that would be. His reply: No, you dont understand. They are going to need people who speak both languages, know the city, and know the club….and not very many people fit that description.

From that point on and for the next two days, nothing else mattered. And when I started trying to see which contacts of relevance I had inside Racing, I realized that after 15 years of hanging out there, talking to people, travelling, etc. these were quite a lot (especially since the crowd that won the last elections comes from the „terraces“). One phone call, and we had the number of a high level executive at the club. Another call, and we had another. And yet another…and we had the number of the Vice President.

On Wednesday I was supposed to call the Vice President and beg him to let me be Matthäuss translator, personal assistant, or whatever. As long as it was in Racing and paid…Id be there in a day. Wednesday morning I wake up, and read in the newspaper that Matthäus cancelled, sending an SMS to Racings president three hours before he was supposed to board a plane to Argentina.

The dream is over, and now I have to somehow return from the fantasy world Ive spent the last few days in and re-enter reality. Veeeeeery difficult.

Anyways, being apparently a sell-out, I chose not publish this article critical of the decision to hire Matthäus, in fear of hurting my chances of getting the job. So here it is now.

---------------------------------------------------------------

This post could begin with the news that Racing has, once again, lost. This time to Newells Old Boys. I could also talk about the 11 games played so far, and the pathetic record of 5 draws and 6 defeats (and six goals scored). I could even also begin with the actually rather interesting news that Racing fans attacked the social center of Independiente and their new stadium with light blue and white paint, even threatening one of the guards at the stadium with a gun in order to gain entry. This is relatively interesting, and would normally be a highlight. Or that Avellaneda has recently been covered in threatening graffiti towards players and management. But, the highlight (if we can call it that) is quite another.

After returning from a few internet free days in France, a friend asked me the question „what was the name of your club exactly again?“ „Racing Club de Avellaneda“ I responded. His answer: „I think you should check the news.“

And the news indeed….Racing hired Lothar Matthäus as new coach!

(Laugh or Cry…)

Two worlds I never thought would meet, suddenly collided. This leads to all sorts of unexpected situations and problems. The main one:

Racing is currently, again, in a battle to not be relegated to second division. An Argentine coach understands that, should such a tragedy occur, Racings fans will burn his home, hunt his family, and lynch him if he isnt able to find refuge in some remote village somewhere in Haiti quickly enough. Matthäus on the other hand, will probably not grasp the gravity of the issue, and if things go badly then he just returns to Germany and forgets the whole affair.

And here the problem gets even worse, because as I live in Germany…the responsibility of making good old Lothar feel the consequences of his failure and hunt his family, burn his home, and chase him into exile will fall upon me. This is bad. Especially because in Argentina, it being a country basically devoid of laws, you can do this and get away with it. Germany on the other hand is quite a different story.

Long story summarized: Racing in second division, Lothar one million dollars richer (its his annual contract), and me in prison. Im not liking these perspectives.

Aside from this „negative utopia,“ some other random thoughts:

-Racing will be talked about more or less regularly in German media. Which means Ill feel obligated to watch every single boring German sports show in the desperate hopes of seeing something about Racing.

-When, as was the case recently while standing in line at the Kebab shop, Racing suddenly appears on television and I start yelling, gesticulating, and singing like a little child in public…people will think that Im insane.

-One of the new reversible jackets were making, has the Racing emblem on it. We figured that there is indeed no practical difference between an imaginary club emblem (such as SC Göteborg 01) and a really existing one which nobody here knows (like Racing). But now, wont we be constantly hearing „isnt that Lothar Matthäuss team?!“

-What is wrong with these people??!! I was quite happy when Racing finally managed to rid itself of the private management and became a club again. I couldnt vote, but would have voted for the management we have now. Sadly, they seem to have done everything they could possibly do wrong…well, wrong. And now, faced with a situation which couldnt really be worse, they think they can correct the problem with a spectacular move like this. The desperation is showing.
With your club in danger of being relegated, how can you hire a guy who says hell only take the job if his wife gets a good modeling job in the country! Needless to say, Racing is currently the joke of the country.

On the bright side, Welt had the following to say about Racing a few days ago:

Racing gehört zu den fünf großen Teams in Argentinien, hat die viertgrößte Anhängerschaft im Land und verzeichnete trotz eines letzten Platzes in der Clausura 2008 den drittbesten Stadionbesuch.

:-)

Racing vs Boca, tofuckingnight 2:15 am. Sleep is for the Weak!

Sleep is for the Weak, and too much Red Bull is bad for you. Anyways….8th game of the season, against the mighty Boca Juniors…maybe time to actually win one?

Whatever, heres a picture and no, no photoshop was involved…

And, ummm, I forgot to put this little gem online last week. :-)

Racing vs Independiente: Ganar o Morir

I know its wrong, and am fully aware that there is absolutely no rational explanation or justification. Yet I cant help myself. I *hate* Independiente. I hate everything about the club, I still hate its no longer existing pathetic stadium, I hate seeing them play, I hate everything about the club. But most of all, I hate its fans. Every time we play them I find myself standing there, a clearly visible frown of distaste on my face, staring at these people as if they were aliens from another planet, or inhabitants of some bizarro universe where good is bad, up is down, and so forth.

Its just so unfathomable to me, that there are people who consider Racing the worst of the worst. People who truly believe Independiente is a better club, and who dont grasp that what makes a club great is its people. That titles and trophys are won by mercenaries, and represent nothing more than better commercial management and some good buying decisions. And as far as people go, people who are always there, who have been to second division and back, who were told Racing had „ceased to exist,“ who paralyzed cities and congresses to save their club, and who despite setback after setback, misery, bankruptcy, embarassment, and betrayal always end up showing where the passion and the party are….there is nothing on this earth like Racing Club de Avellaneda.

We all have our „ticks,“ and this is my one, but still…Independiente fans belong in the zoo. Where little children can gaze at them with awe and fright, while throwing sugar at them in a vain attempt to rid the animal of its „amargura.“ (sourness).

Fortunately this insanity is limited in me to the abstract level…i.e I can still speak to Independiente fans as individuals. Although the awkward silences always end with me looking at them, eyes squinted and head slightly tilted saying „no really, but really, what *is* wrong with you?“

On Sunday, it is once again time for Racing -Independiente. 5.500 „fans“ of Independiente will be at Racing stadium, and through their „cold chestedness“ (you know, no heart…no passion) bring the general temperature a few degrees down.

I, like every Racing fan, have always given much and expected somewhere between little and nothing in return. Twice a year I actually expect and truly want a victory. Please Racing….do us this one small favor, and then we can go back to normality again for the rest of the season.

Some videos…

15.000 rolls of paper to welcome the team against Independiente in 1997. A day Ill never forget, especially because tons of paper plus lots of flares: is a really bad idea.

No more, no time….

„Racing, perdona el color de mi sangre“
„Solo Quien Comparte mi Pasion, Entiende Mi Locura“
„Podran Pasar Mil Anios, y No Salir Campeon…Prefiero Ser de Racing, Y No Amargo Como Vos“

Racing vs Gimnasia, Tonight 01:00 am

Racing still hasnt won a game this tournament, so lets hope that „the force of history“ makes a small mistake today and allows an exception.
Gimnasia, as regular readers here will know, are good friends of ours, so off the field not much to mention. Here is a trailer of an upcoming movie about Gimnasia. It reflects the feelings of many Racing fans as well, only in an even more extreme version of „love through suffering.“ Let it be noted that Gimnasia has, in over 100 years, still not won a single championship.

Tomorrow, 20:30 Atlanta vs Comunicaciones. Atlanta has also not yet won a single game this championship (things are going great…). Racing may be the bigger and more exciting event, and certainly the one I am most passionate about, but Atlanta is special in a very different way. Atlanta is not only the neighborhood (Villa Crespo), but because much smaller and in third division, much wilder. Travelling to all forgotten and dark corners of the greater Buenos Aires area, more often than not with not more than 150-200 people. Anecdotes some other time…. Some videos…

After the games, waiting for the cops to release us. An entertaining, if idiotic sport. Cops open the doors when they get the message that visiting fans are getting on the train. The train station is about 200-300meters from the stadium. Doors open….mass sprint to the train station, usually (although not always) fruitless.

This is „how we ride“ :-) Nice to travel hanging on the outside when all is well and we are just singing, less nice when a. other fans through stones and letting go just isnt an option, b. cops start shooting rubber bullets, c. less dangerous but more frightening….cops drive up real close and start trying to hit you with batons while in motion. Of course, since we arent allowed to go to away games anymore, this is for the moment a thing of the past.

Last year, back home after three years. Stadium went from wood to cement. Rarely so full! (Average is about 800-1000 people).

The real crazy among you can follow it on www.elshowdeatlanta.com.ar and experience how futbol commentators on Argentine radio make a whole lot of nothing happening and generally terrible futbol sound like a World Cup final.

Racing vs Arsenal, 19:00 Today!

Because of World Cup qualifying this coming weekend, Racing plays today and at 19:00 European time! www.rojadirecta.com
Last game was 1-1, and terribly bad. 1 point out of 6, not a spectacular start. Whatever, nothing new.

Arsenal…a neighborhood club, owned by the son of our great Mobster Grondona. This probably explains their presence in first division as well. Not thaat long ago, I used to go see Arsenal play against Atlanta, in second division….And the last game I remember not only did Atlanta win 4-1, but the Atlanta fans pulled down the fences separating both fan blocks, and the last thing I remember is seeing the backs of the Arsenal fans as they literally were run out of the stadium. In the madness of youth, and especially in Atlanta (who recently started playing again, so more Atlanta infos and anecdotes will be coming in the future), it didnt seem all that abnormal. Arsenal is also not a club particularly known for drawing too many people to their games. This is about as full as it gets:

By the way, last Atlanta game….

(I wasted two hours of my life with this, you can sacrifice 10).

Random mediocre Racing video…

New Championship Begins, time to give hope another healthy beating. Racing vs Rosario Central, tonight 01:00 am

They say that „hope dies last,“ and we Racing fans have been working hard since about 40 years to find out just how much truth there is to this statement.

Every year (and indeed twice a year, since in Argentina there are two tournaments per year), against all arguments of logic or reason, we give new birth to the illusion that the coming tournament will bring celebration, madness, and joy not only in the „tribuna“ (terraces), but also on the field. For this purpose, we drag poor old hope out and use it as a shield against reality. And so, basically every week hope gets the living crap kicked out of it, until the matter of us winning a tournament is resolved through pure mathematics, and hope can once again take a much deserved rest.

Tonight, at 1 am, viewable on rojadirecta.com, and transmitted for the first time since I have use of reason on free and public state television….Racing vs Rosario Central. What else are you going to do on a Saturday night?!

As customary, some related videos and anecdotes….

-The game is in Rosario, at Centrals stadium. This is one of the most unpleasant stadiums to visit with Racing, as the „hinchada“ of Central enjoys very strong bonds to the local police, which means that the area around the „away“ fans exit is usually a „liberated zone“ in the time immediately before, during, and after the game. Beatings, attempted robberies, smashed up cars, and so forth are not at all unusual. When does the police appear? When it seems Racing fans might defend themselves succesfully, then they come from nowhere and start shooting rubber bullets at anything that moves.

-In 1999, after Racing was declared bankrupt, the first game we played once we were allowed to play again was against Central in Rosario. 15.000 people travelled to attend it (Rosario is over 300km from Buenos Aires).

-Racing fans entering Centrals less than spectacular stadium, in which in two weeks nothing less than Argentina-Brazil (world cup qualifying) will take place.

Play of the Day!

A goal from midfield…not bad, but why post it here?

Because the goal scorer was none other than the great and glorious „Piojo“ Lopez. The last time I saw him play live the year was 1996, he was playing his last game for Racing, and the game was against the Boca Juniors of Maradona. They, playing for the championship. Racing, playing for the, ummmm….well playing anyways.

First, he gave us this goal…

Then, late in the game. Penalty shot for Boca, and Maradona goes to shoot…

Final score: Racing 1 – 0 Boca

„ME PARECE QUE BOCAAA NO SALE CAMPEON, ME PARECE QUE BOCA NO SALE CAMPEON….PORQUE RACING, PORQUE RACING LO CAGO….“

PS Todays goal was against Beckhams „Galaxy,“ and notice how the goalie goes into the goalpost…ouch!

Relegation: Gimnasia de La Plata, A Friend in Need…

Today, Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata needs to defeat Atletico de Rafaela in the return leg of their relegation series by at least 3 goals in order to avoid relegation to second division. Because of the very strong friendship between Gimnasia and Racing, I am hoping that the pre-game preview superstition works in this case as well as it has the last three Racing games. The game is at 18:30 and can be watched on rojadirecta.com

Friendships between fans, barras, or clubs are very rare the world over, and especially so in Argentina…where all fans basically hate all other fans, regardless of whether they are even in the same division or have ever played against each other. „Amistades“ (friendships) between barras often come and go, but have a distinct tendency to end badly.

One of the most notable exceptions to this rule is the friendship between the barras and fans of Gimnasia de La Plata and Racing Club. Forged during the Libertadores matches between Racing and Estudiantes (bitter rivals of Gimnasia) in the late 60s when Gimnasia fans went to support Racing, the friendship became even stronger in the early 80s, when both clubs were playing in second division.

Since then, every game between the two teams is marked by chants of „El Lobo y La Academia Unidos Siempre Estan,“ banners with both teams` colors, and often even people with the opposite jersey in the popular/terrace of the other. It is also not uncommon for Racing fans to go with Racing jerseys on to the Gimnasia terrace when Gimnasia plays against Independiente, Boca, or generally important games (and vice-versa).

(In Racing, I dont even know which „popular“/terrace this is, it being such a mix of Racing and Gimnasia banners, as well as those stolen from Independiente and Estudiantes).

In 1999, Racing was declared bankrupt and a judge declared that „Racing Club has ceased to exist,“ (a time of Racings history which we will soon be discussing) and the fans of Gimnasia turned out massively to support Racing during that time of filling the stadium despite not playing any games and numerous demonstrations and battles, even turning up at one demonstration with somewhere between 500 and 1000 Gimnasia fans (and let it be noted…La Plata is about one hour from Buenos Aires).

EL LOBO Y LA ACADEMIA UNIDOS SIEMPRE ESTAN….EN LAS BUENAS, Y EN LAS MALAS MUCHO MAS
EL LOBO NO SE VA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Racing 2 – 1 Newells

First and foremost….I think writing the pre-Racing game post is going to become my new religion. Since I started…3 games played, 3 games won. This time 2-1, even though it was 0-1 after 1 minute! Videos of yesterday are at the bottom of the post.
Im already worried about how to keep it up once I get healthy again and am not constantly in front of the computer. The last time I had this problem was 10 years ago, when I started parking my car on game days in front of Avellaneda offices of the Communist Party…and Racing started never losing home games. It lasted almost a year and got so bad that I could only go in my car, arrived hours early so as to be sure that the spot was free, and even once begged a mechanic to fix it before the weekend because otherwise „something terrible might happen.“

Back to the subject of yesterdays game….futbol is not futbol in Argentina unless some absurd incident of violence is related to it, and yesterday was no exception.
Briefly summarized: Newells` barrabravas were arriving in two buses to the stadium, when they encountered a group of about 20 motorcycle delivery guys who may or may not have insulted them. The Newells barras stopped the buses, and a fight ensued. Shots were fired and one motorcycle delivery guy was injured (not seriously). Several shops in the area also suffered some broken windows.
As you can imagine, there were no arrests.

*Before the game…

*The Game…

*After the game…

The season is over for Racing, and begins early August again. But dont worry…Atlanta starts in two weeks, and there is also the relegation games coming up…which in Argentina means guaranteed scandals, violence, and maybe even some futbol playing.
